The Paradigm of Civic Education in the Era of Smart Technology: An Analysis of Strengthening Students’ Civic Responsibility in the Digital Ecosystem

Abstract


This study examines the paradigm shift in Civic Education (PKn) within the smart technology era, focusing on strengthening university students' civic responsibility in digital ecosystems. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology, relevant academic literature published between 2016 and 2026 was retrieved from databases including Google Scholar, DOAJ, and Scopus using advanced search engines like Scispace and Elicit. The thematic analysis of the synthesized data reveals a significant transition from conventional, teacher-centered instruction to an adaptive, constructive digital learning environment. Inovative strategies such as project-based learning and interactive multimedia significantly enhance student engagement and critical thinking. Furthermore, digital literacy serves as the fundamental bridge linking technical proficiency to ethical civic engagement. However, the study also highlights critical challenges, including algorithmic polarization (filter bubbles), misinformation, and digital radicalism that threaten modern democracy. The findings indicate a critical research gap: existing literature remains predominantly descriptive and lacks integrated conceptual models addressing generative AI. Therefore, this paper suggests incorporating critical algorithmic literacy into the curriculum to foster responsible digital citizens.
