The Impact of AI-Powered Pronuounciation Apps on EFL Learners’ Speaking Skill
Abstract
Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the impact of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered pronunciation applications on the speaking skills of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, this research synthesizes findings from scholarly articles published within the last five years. The analysis reveals that applications such as ELSA Speak, Speechace, and SmallTalk2Me have significantly contributed to improvements in learners’ pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and speaking confidence. Key features that enhance the effectiveness of these tools include real-time feedback, adaptive learning materials, and conversational simulations that closely resemble real-life communication. Furthermore, the integration of AI-based chatbots and mind-mapping technologies has proven effective in reducing speaking anxiety and promoting active learner engagement. Despite these benefits, several challenges remain, including limited access to technology, low levels of digital literacy, and insufficient focus on suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation. Accordingly, the integration of AI applications in language learning demonstrates strong potential for advancing EFL speaking competence, provided that adequate infrastructure, educational policies, and pedagogical readiness are in place. This study recommends that future research should focus on examining the influence of AI on suprasegmental features and pragmatic competence in spoken communication.
