LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING (CLT) APPROACH

Abstract


Abstrak: Penggunaan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa global sudah sangat meluas sehingga  memaksa pengajar bahasa Inggris memberikan pembelajaran sejak tingkat dasar.Pakar bahasa memandang penguasaan bahasa asing lebih baik bila dilakukan di usia dini. Nyatanya porsi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di tingkat sekolah dasar sangat kurang. Bahkan beberapa sekolah dasar di Balikpapan sudah tidak lagi memasukkan bahasa Inggris sebagai muatan wajib.Terinspirasi agar para pelajar SD ini tetap bisa belajar bahasa Inggris, maka kegiatan pendampingan ini diinisiasi mulai dari lingkungan terdekat. Kegiatan pendampingan ini khusus ditujukan untuk pelajar tingkat SD berupa pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang diharapkan dapat menjadi suatu kegiatan bagi mereka untuk dapat terus belajar bahasa Inggris walaupun bukan lagi sebagai mata pelajaran wajib di sekolah. Melalui pendekatan Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), kegiatan pembelajaran ini dirancang agar pelajar merasakan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan pendekatan yang menyenangkan dengan langsung melatih kemampuan berkomunikasi. Terbukti dari keinginan peserta dan orang tua peserta agar kegiatan sejenis dapat secara berkesinambungan diadakan di lingkungan mereka.

Abstract:  The use of wider English is due to its function as global language which makes English teacher to teach English since elementary school. It is different in elementary school. Language experts suggest that the chance of learning English better can best obtained in early age. However, English is no longer taught in elementary school as it serves only as local curriculum that will not be an obligation for schools to teach English. Inspired to make English can still be learned mostly by these elementary students, this activity was conducted to help these students in learning English in more interesting ways. Through an approach of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), it is hoped that it can help students of elementary school  still learn English  even though it is not a compulsory subject in their school curriculum. The learning got positive response not only from the students but also from the parents.
