Abstract

This study seeks to explore the evolving application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education by examining its emerging trends, associated benefits and challenges, and its influence on learners’ academic outcomes through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The review drew upon scholarly publications indexed in reputable databases, including Scopus, DOAJ, Google Scholar, Scispace, and Elicit, published between 2016 and 2026. The review procedure comprised four stages: identification, screening, eligibility evaluation, and thematic synthesis of studies that met the predetermined inclusion criteria. The findings suggest that: (1) AI-enhanced learning environments contribute significantly to the development of language proficiency, academic performance, learner motivation, engagement, and self-directed learning by facilitating adaptive and personalized instruction accompanied by immediate feedback; (2) the successful integration of AI is largely determined by factors such as educators’ preparedness, digital competence, technological resources, the effectiveness of pedagogical implementation, and institutional commitment; and (3) notwithstanding its advantages, AI adoption continues to encounter challenges related to disparities in technological access, ethical issues, data privacy and security concerns, algorithmic bias, and the potential for excessive dependence on digital technologies. Moreover, the current literature predominantly concentrates on foundational language skills and short-term educational outcomes, leaving the development of higher-order communicative competencies and the sustainability of AI-driven learning effects over extended periods insufficiently explored. In conclusion, AI demonstrates considerable promise as a transformative educational tool in EFL contexts, provided that its implementation is supported by adequate infrastructure, skilled human resources, and pedagogical frameworks that prioritize learners’ needs and learning experiences.
