The Role of Mass Media in Shaping Public Opinion and Its Implications for Islamic Da’wah in the Digital Era
Abstract
Abstract:The advancement of the digital era has strengthened the role of mass media as a primary instrument in shaping public opinion. This study aims to analyze the role, influence, challenges, and ethical considerations in the utilization of mass media within the context of Islamic da’wah. The method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach through a literature review of various relevant scientific sources. The findings indicate that mass media possesses the capacity to disseminate information, set public agendas, and shape societal frameworks of thought, thereby becoming a strategic medium for conveying Islamic messages. Furthermore, mass media contributes to expanding the reach of da’wah, enhancing the credibility of preachers (da’i), and fostering interfaith dialogue. However, its utilization is not without challenges, including the spread of hoaxes, provocation, and misinformation, which may potentially damage the image of Islam and trigger social conflict. Therefore, the application of ethical da’wah principles that emphasize journalistic standards and respect for diversity is essential. This study asserts that the effectiveness of da’wah through mass media depends on the quality of content, appropriate communication strategies, and collaboration across various media platforms. With a wise and responsible approach, mass media can serve as a constructive, peaceful, and inspiring medium for da’wah in society
