Abstract

Abstract: High emotional demands associated with caring for children in social care institutions may increase the risk of emotional exhaustion and reduce caregivers’ psychological well-being. This community service program aimed to implement a field-based self-care program and evaluate changes in emotional exhaustion, psychological well-being, and caregivers’ knowledge and skills related to self-care after participating in the program. The program involved 23 caregivers at the UPTD RAMPK Social Institution in Ogan Ilir Regency, consisting of 13 women and 10 men. The evaluation employed a one-group pretest–posttest design. The instruments included an emotional exhaustion measure developed by the team with reference to the concept of emotional exhaustion proposed by Maslach and Leiter (2016), a psychological well-being measure referring to Humaidah and Mulyono (2025), and an evaluation form assessing self-care knowledge and skills. The program consisted of psychoeducation, emotion regulation and relaxation exercises, strengthening of social support, and the development of individualized self-care plans. The evaluation results showed that the mean emotional exhaustion score decreased from 27.39 to 18.34, representing a 33.0% reduction, with a statistically significant difference between the pre- and post-program measurements (t = 12.87; p < 0.001). Descriptively, psychological well-being scores increased by 31.4%, while self-care knowledge and skills increased by 50.4%. These findings indicate that participation in the field-based self-care program was accompanied by reduced emotional exhaustion and improvements in psychological well-being and caregivers’ self-care capacity. The program has the potential to serve as a preventive and promotive strategy to support the psychological health and well-being of caregivers in social care institutions.
