Abstract


Problem solving is an important part of the learning process. By solving problems, students can gain experience using their knowledge and skills to be applied in solving non-routine problems. This research includes qualitative descriptive research. The purpose of this research to analyze problem solving skills and the causes of student errors in solving system of linear equations using Gauss Jordan method. The stages used in solving this problem use the four stages of polya, namely understanding the problem, planning a solution, implementing the solution plan, and looking back. Data collection by tests and interviews. The conclusion of this research is: (1) Stage of understanding the problem, many students can understand the problem given; (2) Planning stage of solving, there are students who are still confused in making plans to get solutions; (3) Stage of carrying out the solving plan, there are students who are constrained at this stage because at the planning stage they are still confused and some students are also not careful in solving problem solving; and (4) Looking back stage, there are students who have not reached this stage because they have not completed the previous stage and some students are still not used to looking back.
