Abstract

Abstract:  Complementary midwifery care is an option for midwives and women to reduce medical interventions during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, and based on experience, it is considered quite helpful. However, most of these therapies are not regarded as significant in conventional medicine. This is due to the limited clinical evidence and published information regarding the effectiveness of complementary midwifery care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Objective: This activity aimed to increase participants’ knowledge and awareness, particularly among mothers and children, regarding various types of complementary therapies as alternative non-pharmacological treatments. Methods: The implementation used an educational-participatory approach through partner coordination, needs identification, health education, demonstration, return demonstration, development of educational media, as well as mentoring and evaluation. Results: Health education on complementary therapy involving 20 mothers successfully increased participants’ knowledge from 70% in the pre-test to 85% in the post-test, representing an increase of 15%. The improvement in knowledge indicates that the health education method used was effective in providing an understanding of the safe and appropriate use of complementary therapies, including aromatherapy, warm and cold compresses, breathing relaxation techniques, and infant massage. This activity has the potential to become one of the community health education strategies that can be implemented sustainably to improve the quality of family health.
