Political Narrative Building and International Legitimacy by Appraisal of Judgments: An Appraisal Study of Benjamin Netanyahu's Speech at the UN

cecillia jhovanca pramudita, Khristianto Tianto

Abstract

This study examines how Benjamin Netanyahu uses evaluative language in his political speeches at international forums, particularly in relation to the conflicts between Israel and Hamas and Hezbollah. By applying critical discourse analysis and Martin and White's (2005) Judgement theory, this study discriminates between social esteem and social sanction in evaluation. Data were collected from transcripts of Netanyahu's speeches at the United Nations and analyzed to identify linguistic strategies that construct narratives of existential threat and justify Israel's defensive actions. The results show that Netanyahu consistently uses negative social evaluations to paint opponents as brutal and immoral threats, while affirming Israel's position as the side under threat and justified in defending itself. These findings are important for understanding the role of political language in forming public opinion and perceptions in the context of international conflict
