Abstract


The influence of regional languages on English pronunciation has become an important issue in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) because it can affect the intelligibility of speech in global communication. This study aims to identify, analyze, and synthesize research findings on the impact of regional languages on the intelligibility of English pronunciation among EFL students from a Global Englishes perspective. This study uses a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method on relevant scientific articles from 2016 to 2026. The synthesis results show that differences in the phonological systems between regional languages and English cause various forms of phonological interference, such as phoneme substitution, sound omission, and stress pattern changes. However, this influence doesn't always reduce intelligibility because how understandable speech is also depends on the listener's ability, exposure to accent variations, and the communication context. From the Global Englishes perspective, intelligibility is more relevant as an indicator of successful communication than how close the pronunciation is to a native speaker's accent. The study concludes that regional languages influence English pronunciation variations, but they don't necessarily hinder communication as long as the message can still be understood. These findings can be applied in developing pronunciation learning that focuses on communicative understanding and readiness to interact in a multilingual global environment.
