Abstract

ABSTRACT

The increasing number of elderly people in Indonesia poses serious challenges in public health, one of which is the condition of frailty. Rumah Senja in East Lombok had more than 100 elderly individuals, currently lacks a regular screening system, and its field cadres are unable to independently identify frailty. This research-based community service project aims to enhance the capacity of cadres in identifying frailty using simple functional assessment tools. The method applied is community-based research (CBR) through stages of preparation, implementation of fascilitation, and monitoring and evaluation. The activities were conducted over four weeks, involving 10 cadres and 49 elderly participants. Screening results with guidance showed that 28 elderly (57.1%) were classified as frail, 16 (32.7%) as pre-frail, and only 5 (10.2%) as robust. Cadres’ understanding of frailty improved from an average of 85 to 87 points, and their perception of prevention through exercise, nutrition, and social support increased from 85.7% to 90.9%. A total of 81.8% of cadres recommended monthly screenings, while 18.2% suggested at least twice a year. These findings indicate a high prevalence of frailty at Rumah Senja. This community-based frailty screening model has significant potential to be replicated in other regions as part of a national strategy to support healthy aging in Indonesia.
