Abstract

ABSTRACT
English is an important skill that needs to be honed from an early age, but many students have difficulty speaking and lack interest in learning. This community service activity aims to improve English speaking skills and interest in learning through storytelling assistance using English cartoon stories. The target partners are 34 students from SMPN 17 Mataram, who were selected based on school recommendations as representatives of students who need to improve their speaking skills. The activity was carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation, using a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, and individual and group storytelling practice. The evaluation results showed a significant improvement in student abilities, with the average pre-test score of 72.06 increasing to 77.94 on the post-test, with the standard deviation decreasing from 13.933 to 13.034, and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielding Z = -5.830, p = 0.000 < 0.05. Qualitatively, students became more active, dared to speak in English, and showed high enthusiasm during the activities. These findings indicate that English cartoon stories are effective as a companion medium for storytelling, capable of improving speaking skills and interest in learning English, and can be applied continuously in schools.
