Abstract

Abstract

Soil transmitted helminth (STH) infection remains a significant public health problem, especially among high-risk groups such as farming communities who have frequent contact with soil. The minimal use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) combined with inadequate sanitation and hygiene conditions can increase the risk of various environmentally-based infectious diseases, such as STH infection, which ultimately reduce work productivity and quality of life. This community service activity aimed to increase the knowledge of farmers in Gisting District, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung Province, regarding the types of STH worms that commonly infect humans, modes of transmission, prevention efforts, and their effects on health, through health education. The activity targeted members of farmer groups and their families, with an initial invitation extended to 80 farmers. The actual activity was carried out on August 13, 2025, attended by 16 farmers and accompanied by agricultural extension workers from the local Agricultural Extension Center (BPP). The methods used included interactive lectures, discussions, and the distribution of simple educational media. Evaluation was conducted using a pretest before and a posttest after the activity. The difference between the pre- and posttest results was analyzed using the Wilcoxon statistical test. The results demonstrated a significant increase in participants' knowledge about helminthiasis infection after the intervention. This was indicated by an increase in the mean score and minimum value from 82.0 (37.5) to 90.6 (62.5), and a statistically significant difference between the mean pretest and posttest scores (p = 0.009). This activity is expected to encourage changes in clean and healthy living behaviors (CHLB) to reduce the risk of helminth infection among the farming community. The conclusion is that there was a significant increase in the knowledge of the target audience following the implementation of this activity.
