Abstract

Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance lecturers’ understanding and capacity in preparing high-quality research grant proposals. Since the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering, the number of lecturers who have successfully obtained research grants has been very limited. Records indicate that the first lecturers from FTR to receive research funding only emerged in 2024, involving two lecturers serving as research team leaders. Preliminary observations revealed several common obstacles in proposal preparation, including inaccurate problem formulation, inappropriate methodological design, unclear and unmeasurable research outputs, as well as administrative deficiencies that may affect proposal feasibility. To address these challenges, this community service program was implemented through socialization activities and Sharing Sessions using an educational and participatory approach. This approach facilitated two-way discussions and active interactions between the facilitators and participants. The activity was attended by 15 lecturers from various departments within the Faculty of Engineering. Evaluation results indicate an overall improvement in participants’ understanding across four key aspects: administration, substance, methodology, and outputs. Significant improvements were observed in administrative, substantive, and output aspects, particularly in writing format, referencing, budget planning (RAB), background formulation, problem identification, research objectives, output measurability, and journal selection. Meanwhile, methodological improvements tended to involve refinement rather than major changes, reflecting a high level of initial understanding. Overall, this community service activity was effective in encouraging participants to reflect on and improve the quality of their research proposals and is expected to support higher-quality research submissions in future funding periods.
