Abstract

Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) technology holds significant potential for vocational education; however, a gap between SMK (vocational high school) curricula and current industry demands remains a persistent challenge. This community service activity aimed to enhance the IoT competence of students and teachers through a smart environment monitoring prototype training at SMK Negeri 4 Pontianak. The activity was conducted on May 12, 2026, and attended by 25 Grade XI students and 2 teachers from the Industrial Electronics Engineering program. The implementation employed a structured hands-on learning approach across four stages: (1) theoretical socialization, (2) system demonstration, (3) direct practice training, and (4) activity evaluation. During the practice stage, participants were divided into six groups and tasked with building a prototype based on the ESP32 C3 Super Mini microcontroller, integrated with an LDR sensor and a microphone sensor to monitor light intensity and noise levels in real-time via the Blynk platform. All six groups successfully completed functional prototypes within the allocated time. Evaluation using a Likert-scale questionnaire completed by 25 student participants yielded positive results across all four measured aspects: the mean score for IoT Material Understanding was 3.79/5.00, Practical Skills and Implementation 3.59/5.00, Interest and Motivation 4.01/5.00, and Training Implementation Evaluation 4.09/5.00. These findings indicate that the hands-on learning approach is effective in enhancing participants' technical competencies while fostering their interest in IoT technology development within the vocational education context.
