Abstract

Abstract

Chemotherapy in cancer patients often causes nausea and vomiting, which can reduce quality of life. Red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) has the potential to help reduce nausea and vomiting; however, patients’ knowledge regarding its use remains limited. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge of patients and their families regarding functional beverage formulations made from red ginger as a complementary therapy to help reduce nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. The community service activity was conducted on May 30, 2026, at Rumah Singgah Sahabat Orang Sakit, Mantikulore District, Palu City, Central Sulawesi Province, involving 20 participants consisting of cancer patients and their families. The community empowerment methods used included lectures or educational sessions, interactive discussions, demonstrations on making functional beverages red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum), and the distribution of educational leaflets on the use of red ginger as a complementary antiemetic for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Evaluation was conducted using a pre-test and post-test design on the 20 respondents. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 6.55 to 9.00. The percentage of participants in the “knowledge” category increased from 35% to 90%. The results of the Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference (p < 0.001). Thus, education regarding red ginger functional beverage formulations is effective in increasing respondents’ knowledge as a means of supporting complementary therapy for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
