Abstract

ABSTRACT

The increasing volume of plastic waste in Semarang City has not been matched by optimal use of waste banks, while the Al-Ikhsaniyah Child Welfare Institution (LKSA) still lacks a waste management program and adequate sources of economic empowerment for its foster children. This community service activity aims to optimize plastic waste management through collaboration between Resik Becik Waste Bank and LKSA Al-Ikhsaniyah in the form of training on making keychain crafts from plastic waste, combined with strengthening business financial literacy among the santri. The method applied was Participatory Training and Mentoring, consisting of preparation, introduction, socialization, implementation, and evaluation stages, involving 20 foster children from elementary to junior high school level and a practitioner as technical mentor. The results show improved understanding among participants in raw material sourcing, craft-making skills, business financial literacy, and simple cash-flow management, as reflected in the pre-test and post-test comparison. Participants were able to calculate production cost, determine selling price, and prepare a simple profit-loss statement for the crafts produced. This activity recommends strengthening a sustainable partnership between the waste bank and the LKSA as a replicable smart-recycling empowerment model for similar social institutions elsewhere.
