Abstract

Abstract

Hypertension is a common health issue among the elderly and contributes significantly to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Its management requires not only pharmacological therapy but also non-pharmacological approaches, one of which is yoga. This community service activity aimed to implement group activity therapy in the form of yoga for elderly individuals with hypertension and to evaluate its impact on blood pressure. The activity involved 25 elderly individuals diagnosed with hypertension; however, only 10 actively participated. The intervention consisted of simple yoga exercises performed in three repetitions per session, with each cycle lasting 15 minutes. The yoga movements were adapted to the physical conditions of the participants. Only those with a maximum blood pressure of 170/110 mmHg were allowed to join. The activity was supervised by a local midwife, and in case of emergencies, participants were referred to the nearest health center. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention. The results showed that all participants experienced a decrease in blood pressure, with an average reduction of 11.4 mmHg in systolic and 7.2 mmHg in diastolic pressure. This indicates that yoga can serve as an effective, safe, and accessible complementary therapy to support hypertension management in the elderly. Additionally, the activity increased participants’ awareness of the importance of physical activity in maintaining cardiovascular health. Moving forward, efforts should be made to enhance elderly participation through family support, involvement of healthcare professionals, and integration of yoga programs into elderly health posts (posyandu lansia) to maximize the benefits.
