Abstract

Abstract

Access to safe and clean water is essential for maintaining the health of elementary school children. However, limited water treatment facilities and low hygiene awareness remain challenges in many schools, including SD Negeri Rappojawa No. 71 Makassar, which relies on untreated well water without an adequate filtration system. This community service program aimed to improve students’ knowledge and health awareness through educational activities and the implementation of simple water filtration technology. The program methods included interactive sessions on the importance of clean water, demonstrations of simple filtration devices using sand, activated carbon, and ceramic materials, as well as pre-test and post-test assessments to evaluate students’ understanding. A total of 30 fifth-grade students participated in the program. The results showed an average increase of 43.33% in students’ knowledge scores after the program implementation. In addition, students demonstrated active participation and a better understanding of clean water utilization and clean and healthy living behaviors. These findings indicate that the integration of simple water filtration technology with health education is effective in enhancing environmental health literacy among elementary school students. This program has the potential to be replicated in other schools to support improved health outcomes and the achievement of sustainable development goals related to clean water and sanitation.
