Abstract

Abstract

This community service activity aims to optimize the function of the school library through book grouping carried out by students of the School Field Introduction Program (PLP) at SDN 38 Mataram as an effort to increase student reading interest. The initial condition of the library showed books arranged in piles without grouping by class, theme, or subject, so students had difficulty finding reading materials. PLP students conducted an intervention in the form of grouping books by class, type of book (story and lesson), subject, shelf labeling, and creating colorful loan cards that were attractive and easy for students to understand. The activity was carried out for one week by utilizing the time between PLP activities after going through the observation stage of the library condition and school culture. The results of the activity showed significant changes in the order of the collection, ease of student access to books, and an increase in student visits to the library. These findings are in line with the theory of grouping collections based on reader interest (genrefication) and visual labeling practices recommended in school library literature over the past five years. This simple yet contextual intervention has been proven to be able to improve the library's function as a center of school literacy and can be replicated in other schools with similar conditions.
