Abstract

Abstract

Hypertension represents a significant worldwide health issue necessitating thorough management strategies, which may incorporate complementary herbal treatments. Nevertheless, the increasing adoption of medicinal plants within communities often lacks sufficient public understanding concerning their safety and appropriate clinical application. This community outreach initiative was designed to augment public health knowledge and consciousness regarding the use of herbal remedies as secure, logical, and empirically supported adjunct therapies for hypertension. This initiative was conducted via interactive health education sessions during the "Jurus Sehat Alami" (Natural Healthy Moves) program, which was concurrently broadcasted virtually through Zoom and made available on MQFM Jogja Radio. The educational content primarily concentrated on four specific medicinal plants: roselle, garlic, celery, and moringa leaves, with a specific focus placed on their safety parameters and potential interactions with pharmaceutical drugs. The initiative elicited a highly favorable response from the public, as reflected in the numerous pertinent inquiries concerning the recommended duration of use, the timing of consumption relative to conventional medications, and the suitability of herbal remedies for geriatric individuals. An assessment of the program's impact revealed a notable enhancement in the participants' health literacy. This was evidenced by their discerning comprehension that herbal remedies serve exclusively as supplementary treatments and are not intended to substitute established medical protocols.
