Abstract

Seluruh 79 peserta menyelesaikan program.

ABSTRACT

Tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure are major concerns in correctional settings. Educating incarcerated men on pregnancy-related harms is relevant because their smoking may affect pregnant partners and family members after release. To describe the implementation and group-level verbal findings of a prison-based health education programme on active smoking, secondhand smoke, lung health, and pregnancy-related harms. A descriptive, single-session community engagement programme was conducted on 20 April 2026 at Yogyakarta Class IIA Correctional Facility. Seventy-nine incarcerated men who smoked attended a 60-minute session (interactive lecture, brainstorming, discussion, and leaflet distribution). Understanding was assessed verbally at group level, before and after the session, across four domains, without a validated instrument or individual scoring; analysis was descriptive only. All 79 participants completed the programme. Pre-session responses reflected general awareness that smoking is harmful but limited specificity. Post-session responses were more specific, including references to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, preterm birth, low birth weight, and smoking cessation. The programme was feasible within correctional constraints, and post-session responses were qualitatively more specific than pre-session responses. The group-level design precludes conclusions about individual-level effectiveness; structured, individually scored, and follow-up assessments are recommended for future programmes.
