Abstract

Abstract: Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is a critical component in the mining industry, where workers are continuously exposed to high risks of accidents and hazardous conditions. Initial observations conducted among a group of female workers at a coal mining company in Kutai Kartanegara revealed that many of them still had limited understanding of basic safety procedures. Several workers were unfamiliar with the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and they had minimal access to engaging and easy-to-understand learning materials that could support independent learning. These findings highlight the need for an educational approach that is more responsive to their learning characteristics, particularly through visual media that is more communicative and easier to follow. Through this community engagement program, the team aimed to enhance the safety knowledge and safe-working behaviors of female workers by utilizing interactive visual media. The program was structured into three key stages: an introductory OSH session to build foundational understanding, a workshop on PPE usage and hazard identification, and training sessions that incorporated educational videos, animated infographics, and VR/AR simulations. The activities were conducted over four days and involved 30 female workers aged 24–45 years, supported by OSH lecturers, Visual Communication Design lecturers, KKN-T students, and internship students. Evaluation was carried out through pre-tests, post-tests, field observations, and satisfaction questionnaires. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement, with average scores increasing from 54.3% to 89.5%, reflecting a gain of 37.8%. The most significant improvements were noted in PPE mastery and procedural compliance. Furthermore, 92% of participants agreed that interactive visual media made safety materials easier to understand and more engaging. Overall, this approach proved effective in strengthening OSH competencies and fostering a more inclusive safety culture within the mining work environment.
