Abstract

Abstract: This community service programme aims to reduce conflicts between humans and snakes and enhance snake (Serpentes) conservation efforts as part of strengthening the local ecosystem. This activity is motivated by the ecological role of snakes as natural predators that control agricultural pest populations. However, interactions between communities living near forests and snakes often lead to conflicts that result in snakes being killed. The programme includes education on the ecological role of snakes, training in safe snake handling, and a conflict mitigation system involving local communities. The activity was carried out in four stages, namely needs assessment, training implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and documentation. The training, which was attended by 28 participants consisting of farmers, village officials, health cadres, and homemakers, showed an increase in skills and knowledge about prevention and first aid for snake bites through practice and a 41.5% increase in pre-post test scores. These results are supported by the community's commitment to implementing safe, conservation-based snake conflict management. With an educational and participatory approach, this programme has reduced human-snake conflicts, protected local ecosystems, and raised community awareness of conservation.
