Abstract

Abstract: The aging process triggers various physiological changes, including decreased muscle mass, flexibility, and tissue elasticity, which can increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and reduce functional capacity in older adults. Stretching exercises are a safe, easy-to-perform, and beneficial form of physical activity for maintaining flexibility and supporting the quality of life of older adults. This Community Service Activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of older adults regarding the benefits of and methods for independently performing stretching exercises. This activity involved 84 elderly participants at GBI Bethel Area, Salatiga City, through stages of health screening, education using lectures and discussion, demonstrations, and hands-on stretching exercises guided by the implementation team. Evaluation was conducted using a pre-test and post-test design to measure changes in participants’ knowledge after the intervention. The results showed that the average knowledge score increased from 79.40 ± 21.97 in the pre-test to 83.69 ± 14.20 in the post-test, with an average increase of 4.29 points. In addition, all participants were able to follow the stretching exercise practice according to the stages taught and showed high enthusiasm throughout the activity. These results indicate that education combined with demonstration and hands-on practice is effective in increasing participants' understanding of stretching exercises. A similar program needs to be implemented continuously through ongoing support and regular evaluation so that the knowledge gained can be implemented as active living behaviours that support the health and independence of older adults.
