Abstract

Abstract: Mild stress among Indonesian migrant children at Sanggar Bimbingan Muhammadiyah (SBM) Kepong, Malaysia, is a concern that may be influenced by limited access to formal education, cultural differences, and the demands of adapting to a new environment. This community engagement program aimed to enhance children’s knowledge and skills in managing stress through the use of lavender essential oil as a non-pharmacological approach. The program involved 35 students and was conducted in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The implementation stage included education on stress and its management, a demonstration of lavender aromatherapy roll-on preparation, and interactive discussions. The evaluation was conducted qualitatively through direct observation during the activities and interviews to obtain participant feedback. The evaluation results demonstrated the achievement of learning outcomes, with 91.4% of participants able to identify simple strategies for managing mild stress, 88.6% able to explain the benefits of aromatherapy as a relaxation method, and 94.3% able to describe the steps involved in preparing a lavender aromatherapy roll-on. Participants’ responses during the interviews also indicated positive acceptance of aromatherapy as a simple approach to support relaxation. Active participation in discussions and practical activities served as an additional indicator of program achievement. In conclusion, education combined with hands-on practice in the use of lavender essential oil may provide a feasible approach to enhancing children’s knowledge and practical skills related to non-pharmacological stress management.
