Abstract

Abstract: The implementation of occupational safety and health (OSH) practices in Basic Chemistry II laboratory sessions at the Chemistry Education Study Program, University of Papua, has not yet demonstrated optimal compliance with laboratory safety procedures. This community service activity aimed to improve students’ hard skills in applying safety procedures and using laboratory equipment appropriately, as well as to strengthen their soft skills, including discipline, responsibility, awareness, and concern for laboratory safety culture through OSH education. A total of 15 students participated in the program. The activities were carried out through the development of OSH-based laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs), the creation of safety posters, socialization sessions, assistance during laboratory activities, and evaluation using observation sheets and a questionnaire consisting of 20 statements. The indicators of program success were determined based on improvements in students’ compliance with safety procedures, the proper use of laboratory equipment, the return of equipment to its designated place, and positive participant responses to the program. The results showed an increase in compliance with tying back hair from 53.3% to 93.3%, proper use of laboratory equipment from 60.0% to 93.3%, and returning equipment to its designated place from 46.7% to 93.3%. The average participant response, based on the 20 questionnaire statements, reached 92.8%, which was categorized as very good. These findings indicate that OSH education effectively improves students’ technical and non-technical skills while strengthening the laboratory safety culture among Chemistry Education students.
