Abstract

Abstract: Intermittent blood glucose testing is an important step in early detection of diabetes mellitus risk, especially at the community level. This community service activity aims to increase public awareness of the importance of checking blood sugar levels and provide education about the impact of hyperglycemia, one of which is the increased risk of infection. The targets of the activity were parents of students from one kindergarten school who play a strategic role in making family health decisions. Methods included free blood glucose testing, recording data on age, gender, and test results, and providing health education. Of the total 18 respondents, most (66.7%) had blood glucose levels in the normal category (<140 mg/dL), 22.2% in the prediabetes category (140-199 mg/dL), and 11.1% in the diabetes category (≥200 mg/dL). Visualization of the data through bar graphs, boxplots, and scatter plots showed a higher variation in blood glucose levels in the female group and a tendency for extreme GDS values at the age of 40-54 years. This activity not only successfully detected several cases of diabetes risk, but also provided direct understanding to the community about the importance of blood glucose control to prevent complications, including infection. Evaluation of knowledge was done directly by oral question and answer to participants who did the examination. Participants experienced a 100% increase in knowledge and documented in the logbook recording the results. The involvement of students in the implementation of activities also supports professional capacity building and real contributions in the field of public health. In conclusion, this activity is effective as a promotive and preventive effort in early detection of diabetes mellitus and increasing public health literacy regarding blood sugar management.
