Abstract

Abstract: Malaria remains a major public health problem in Mimika District, with consistently high incidence rates each year. One of the main barriers to the use of insecticide-treated bed nets is the discomfort caused by heat, which reduces community compliance. The objective of this study was to enhance malaria prevention efforts through the modification of insecticide-treated bed nets into insecticide-treated ventilation screens that are more practical and comfortable for household use. The study involved 30 households with pregnant women, infants, or toddlers, in collaboration with local partners. The research team conducted socialization, education on maintenance, installation of modified insecticide-treated ventilation screens, and mentoring by malaria cadres. Evaluation was carried out through observation and interviews regarding utilization and malaria incidence after the intervention. The results showed an improvement in cadres’ skills in installation and education (85%) and a reduction in malaria incidence among target households by 73% within seven months. This innovation proved to be effective, well-accepted by the community, and has the potential to improve quality of life.
