Abstract

Abstract: The degradation of mangrove land threatens fruit bat nesting habitats, a problem exacerbated by the gap between theoretical understanding and practical experience among forestry students. This community service initiative aims to enhance students’ knowledge, raise their awareness of flora and fauna conservation, and improve their technical skills in preserving coastal ecosystems. The implementation method utilised an experiential learning approach, encompassing environmental education activities, ecosystem observation, and mangrove planting. The participants comprised 30 students from HIMA Sylva Indonesia (PC) at the University of West Sulawesi. The results of the community service programme demonstrated a tangible, quantitatively measurable increase in participants’ capacity. Based on the evaluation results, the average competency level of participants prior to the programme (pre-test) was 49 and increased substantially to 97.3 after completing the programme (post-test). This achievement represents an absolute increase of 48.3, equivalent to a 98.60 per cent rise in competency. Specifically, the students demonstrated improvements in soft skills, such as critical awareness of environmental protection—particularly the conservation of mangrove forests as wildlife ecosystems—as well as hard technical skills in the practice of mangrove restoration silviculture.
