Abstract

Abstract:  Suicidal ideation is an important marker of suicide risk among adolescents, supporting the need for school-based early detection and mental health education. This program aimed to identify suicidal ideation and improve students' knowledge of mental health and suicide prevention. A total of 225 Grade XI students completed screening using the Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS) and participated in interactive lectures, discussions, question-and-answer activities, and coping-strategy demonstrations; knowledge was evaluated using 15 true-or-false statements among 196 participants with complete paired pre-test and post-test data, with success defined as a statistically significant increase in the mean score at p<0.05. No participant screened positive for suicidal ideation, while the mean knowledge score increased from 7.69 ± 1.89 to 8.49 ± 1.91, equivalent to a 10.4% increase (mean difference 0.80; t = -4.042; p<0.001). The program significantly improved students' knowledge despite the absence of suicidal ideation at the time of screening, supporting periodic education, confidential monitoring, and an operational referral pathway.
