Abstract

Abstract: The poor quality of turbid and odorous groundwater from bore wells has become a major challenge at Orphanage KM 24 Balikpapan, adversely affecting the fulfillment of daily sanitation needs. This community service program aimed to improve clean water quality and strengthen the capacity of the partner institution through the implementation of Hydrovate filtration multilayer media technology. The activity was carried out through stages comprising observation and needs assessment, filtration system design analysis, installation of multi-layered filter media, outreach, experiential learning-based education, and monitoring and evaluation which utilizing observation techniques and a seven-question Likert-scale (1–5) questionnaire administered to ten partner respondents, alongside the Kirkpatrick analysis approach. The implementation of the program demonstrated that the filtration system produced clearer water with a significant reduction in sediment accumulation. Learning evaluation results indicated that the average level of participants’ understanding across all assessed aspects increased from 50% to 94%. The most significant improvements in the partners' understanding were observed in the areas of system maintenance skills (rising from 25% to 88%), understanding of water conditions (from 35% to 95%), and understanding of water odor (from 40% to 93%). These findings reflect the success of the community service program in enhancing the partners’ capacity to operate, maintain, and manage an economically sustainable multilayer filtration system.
